Tuesday, October 15, 2002On Saturday night, D and I took a break from working at the lab to go grab some dinner. On the way, we got into a discussion about age...ever since I've known him, he's had this "something" missing in his life. On the outside, he really could pass for 24 or 25, but once you get to know him, he's got "older" concerns. He was lamenting over how age makes you slower...things like, "yeah, when I was 16 or 17, and we played soccer, I could run for an hour, without even warming up. Now, after 10 minutes I get tired." And things like "when I see these younger guys doing what I'm doing(schoolwise), I want to compete with them, but they're just younger and faster..." Of course I told him he was foolish to think so...he often goes overboard with it all...afterall, he wasn't really old at all. But I could definately see where he was coming from. And I could definately see myself in the same position later in life. I told him "Man, its the trade off...y'know. Thats how nature is. The younger ones are quicker and faster, but usually brash and naive. The older you get, the wiser you get. Say I had a delimma, I'd have to try all the options, to see which one suited me best...whereas you've already been through it, so you could just head straight for what was right. Y'know, its just a matter of your point of view. You've just got to find a point of view that results in a positive outlook for you." And y'know what? Thats it. People often tell me I'm "optimistic", or "positive"...and sometimes they'll say, "I don't know how you do it." Well, when I told him that, I realized that that was really what I've been doing. Just looking at things in a way that there's always a positive outcome. Things people take to be negative, can always be viewed as a learning experience. During a dinner a few weeks ago with Y and her friend, the topic of regret came up...and I said "I don't really regret anything in my life. Because had I not gone through all the things I did, I wouldn't become who I am. So I guess the question is, "are you happy with who you are now?" If the answer is yes, then you shouldn't regret a thing."
